Library Event: Author Luncheon with Dr. Dan Schafer
April 9 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Dr. Dan Schafer will speak at the Friends of the Daytona Beach Library’s 39th annual Author Luncheon at noon Tuesday, April 9, at The Palmetto Club, 1000 S. Beach St., Daytona Beach. Social time begins at 11:30 a.m.
Dr. Schafer is an emeritus professor of history at the University of North Florida, where he served as department chair.
After moving to Florida from Minnesota in 1972, he became immersed in the history of his new state. He was intrigued by the story of Anna Madgigine Jai Kingsley, an African princess who was enslaved, forcibly transported to Florida, held in bondage, freed and married to her white master, Zephaniah Kingsley. She bore four of his children and then rose to prominence as a slaveholder. Schafer told her story in “Anna Madgigine Jai Kingsley: African Princess, Florida Slave, Plantation Slaveowner.”
He later wrote the complementary biography, “Zephaniah Kingsley Jr. and the Atlantic World: Slave Trader, Plantation Owner, Emancipator.” His other books include “Thunder on the River: The Civil War in Northeast Florida” and “William Bartram and the Ghost Plantations of British East Florida.” He’s completing research for a book on Andrew Turnbull and the founding of New Smyrna Beach.
Following his presentation, Dr. Schafer will answer questions and sign copies of his books.
Tickets are $30 each and must be purchased by April 1. They are available at the front desk of the Daytona Beach Regional Library, 105 E. Magnolia Ave., Daytona Beach.
